What a winter this has been! One that has occasioned many of us, adults and young people alike, to think about what we want to reconnect with, moving forward.
Today, we’re launching a very special project that will give us a glimpse into how teens might answer the question, what are you reconnecting with?
We’re thrilled to be partnering once again with the J. Paul Getty Museum to produce another engaging Open Call for teen photographers. Centered around the theme of Unshuttered 4.0 and run on Community.Amplifier.org, "Reconnecting with__" asks teens, in the midst of their third academic year impacted by the novel coronavirus, who and/or what they are reconnecting with. Will it be their friends, their culture, their family, nature, themselves, their schools, or their communities?
For this project, students will take and submit original photographs, with an emphasis on traditional and nontraditional portraits, which will be reviewed by top curators and creatives at the J. Paul Getty Museum and Amplifier. The top 20 winning photographs will then be transformed into Amplifier-style artworks by some of our top artists such as Tracie Ching, Alex Albadree, and Mer Young and shown in a public J. Paul Getty Museum exhibit opening in mid-June 2022!
Teachers and parents, we’ve put together a multimedia lesson plan consisting of a video lesson on portraiture by Amplifier’s Founder and Co-Creative Director Aaron Huey and a three-part PDF lesson plan that guides young people through: 1) a circle practice for brainstorming, 2) application of knowledge through practice, and 3) presenting their submission-ready photographs to peers via a closing circle. You can download these materials, as well as submit student works, here. In addition to this, we will also be releasing short videos from renowned photographers Josué Rivas, Hannah Reyes Morales, and Chip Thomas detailing additional best practices in portraiture, and how they personally would approach this theme. Stay tuned for those. We are excited to see the stories, voices, and perspectives that will be amplified through this project! The open call closes on April 1st. Please tag us as you go at @Amplifierart and @gettyunshuttered! Sincerely, the Amplifier team

P.s. We want to make sure that we amplify your priorities in 2022. If you have five extra minutes, would you please fill out this survey? Thank you!
